Photo Title : Thornburg - Surinam - Front  |  close this window

Here's some pictures of the other Stedman banjo. This is the one he brought back to Holland which now resides in a Dutch Museum. I though you might find it interesting. I know Scott Didlake produced a few banjos like this. It might be interesting to compare the two makers' approaches. I was aiming for as close a reproduction as I could based on a picture and dimensions furnished by the museum. The action is so high that it's almost impossible to note by depressing the strings to the fingerboard. It can, however, be played by touching the strings at the appropriate places - kind of like playing a bottleneck guitar. Overall length: 33" Gourd: 9 1/2" X 4" Neck: Mahogany (no fingerboard) Head: Calfskin Bob
